We just bought an Airstream trailer - the beginning

We just secured a 1974 Airstream Tradewind trailer.
It's in excellent condition with original fittings throughout and nary a bump nor scratch on the outer aircraft-grade aluminium skin.

It is currently nestled in the woods at Sagle in Idaho, USA.

We have a shipping agent locked in and are in the process of organising overland haulage to the port just north of LA.

A bit of backstory...

We currently live in Brisbane, Australia but we've recently decided to move to our place at Federal behind Byron Bay on the NSW north coast. It is 12 acres of rolling paddocks with a view of the Nightcap ranges and a creek or two running through it. Our daughter is six years old. She'll go to a country school, we'll get a dog, all that stuff.

The one big problem is that the house is absolutely tiny. Two bedrooms and little else.

Given that our place is so small at Federal there simply isn't the space for a working studio. Our plan is to (largely) strip the interior of the Airstream and fit it out as studio - sited just behind the house. It will also have a double bed in it for when friends or family come to stay.

This guy and his trailer are our inspiration for the fit-out...

Note: the inside of our trailer does not look like this (yet). This is the work of the very talented Matt Hofmann.

We have a long way to go : )

I plan to update this blog as we go. The idea is to help others who are trying to bring an Airstream to Australia. It really isn't that hard.

I expect to provide details of the following topics...
- Deciding which Airstream you want
- Sourcing an Airstream
- What you should budget
- The import process
- People who can help you
- Stripping and polishing your Airstream
- Interior renovation
- etc.

I am certainly no expert on any of these points but I have been through a few so far and I have learned plenty.

Follow and stay tuned!

Matt.
